A New World Order – Cybersecurity Risks, Mitigation Strategies and Opportunities for Canadians in a Rapidly Changing Global Environment

We are more reliant on technology today than ever before. It impacts all facets of modern life, including by enabling communication, automation, transportation and analytics. While technology offers powerful solutions to facilitate and expedite our daily routines, it can also be a key vulnerability with respect to the protection of sensitive data including personal, professional and/or proprietary information.

Due to the sudden and prolonged “work-from-home” mandates in the wake of the global pandemic and a marked surge in “hacktivism” and “cyberwarfare” in response to rising political tensions, governments, businesses and individuals alike have all become much more aware of unprecedented cyber threats emerging both domestically and internationally and the corresponding importance of cybersecurity measures.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has reinforced that awareness and sparked a flurry of cyber threat concerns. With nations imposing hefty and far-reaching sanctions on Russia, the fear of cyber retaliation is imminent. 

This new world order prompts a call-to-action for businesses and individuals alike to reflect on their existing cyber defences. Bad actors prey on uncertainty, inexperience, fear, and ignorance to extract valuable information from their targets. Businesses would be well-served by meaningfully considering and implementing proactive cybersecurity protocols to mitigate the risk of falling victim to  cybercrime.
